Frequently Asked Questions

Dalcross Eye Centre
Dalcross Eye Centre

What is Dalcross Eye Centre?

It is a Centre that provides procedural facilities for a number of accredited eye surgeons on the North Shore of Sydney. The Centre is equipped and staffed to undertake number of specialised eye procedures such as cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, retinal surgery, corneal transplantation’s and oculoplastic surgery. The most common procedure is cataract surgery.

What are the benefits of having Day Surgery?

A minimal disruption to your routine, and the opportunity to recover at home, are major advantages. Certain procedures still require an overnight stay. Dalcross Eye Centre offers both. For certain procedures your Health Fund may only fund a day only admission.

Does Day Surgery mean the procedure is only minor?

No. The vast majority of eye surgery is now performed in a day surgery setting. The development of new surgical techniques and advances in anaesthesia have resulted in a rapid recovery for patients from procedures. The outcome of surgery is also significantly better and surgeons are able to offer new solutions for problems previously regarded as inoperable.

When do I go home?

When you have fully recovered from your anaesthesia, you will be offered some light refreshments. Day patients (mostly cataract procedures) will be discharged home with a relative or friend, when they feel completely comfortable. Overnight patients will be transferred to their overnight ward accommodation. All patients will be given advice, and details of their post operative instructions when they are discharged to home. During the first week after surgery, one of our nurses will phone to check on your recovery and well-being. If you have any concerns or questions about your eye condition, please contact your ophthalmologist.

Where do I find more information on my condition?

Your doctor is the best source of information. A significant number of leaflets on any specific condition is also available. For more information on your condition, visit your surgeon or the Centre. Dalcross Eye Centre is also able to provide video information.

Preparing for your Surgery

One or two days prior to your day of surgery, you will receive a telephone call from one of our nurses. The nurse will let you know your arrival time, fasting times, check travel and post-operative arrangements and answer any questions you may have. Sometimes we have difficulty reaching you, please call us the afternoon before your surgery if you have not received a telephone call from one of our nurses. For your own safety, please plan to have a responsible adult to accompany you home and to have someone stay with you overnight.

If you become ill

Should you develop a red eye, cough, cold or any other signs of illness, please contact your doctor and the Centre as your surgery may need to be postponed.

On the Day

Bathe or shower before arrival. NO make-up, nail polish or jewellery should be worn. Please leave valuables at home. Wear clean comfortable clothing. It is important to keep taking any heart, blood pressure or asthma medication on the morning and day of surgery with a sip of water. If you have diabetes or take blood thinning medication, you will need to discuss the management of your medication during the telephone call with our nurse and preferably with your surgeon prior to surgery. Bring all current medications with you.

After Surgery

Before going home, you and your carer will receive both verbal and written instructions on your post-operative care. Take it easy and rest for the next 24 hours.

Things to avoid after Surgery:

  • Looking after small children
  • Driving a car or riding a bike
  • Operating machinery
  • Strain or strenuous activity
  • Signing important documents

Please check with your surgeon before resuming any of these activities.
